The pig is the archetypal unclean animate being in Judaism and Islam

Followers of many religions lay a taboo on the consumption or handling of sure animals; such animals are called unclean animals. Persons who handle such animals may need to purify themselves to go rid of their uncleanness.

History

The origins of practices in relation to "clean animals" and "unclean animals" are lost to prehistory but are maintained by several large religions. The thought that some animals are dangerous or disgusting is present in well-nigh all known homo cultures.

The virtually well known prescriptions concerning clean and unclean animals are probably those found in the Bible. Both the books Leviticus and Deuteronomy comprise lists of unclean animals but the idea can as well be plant in the volume of Genesis in the story of Noah and the Ark.

"Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth" Genesis 7:8

Judaism

In Judaism, Kashrut (kosher) is the set of dietary laws governing what can or cannot be consumed. These laws are based upon the Torah and the Talmud. Co-ordinate to Jewish police force, many animals considered clean have cloven hooves and ruminate. Jews are forbidden from eating pork, every bit swine are considered to exist unclean. In the context of Judaism, the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy from the Hebrew Bible specify what must not be consumed.

The Volume of Leviticus states:

"All the same these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you." Leviticus 11:4

Mice are forbidden "crawling creatures" Leviticus 11:29.

Mice are forbidden "itch creatures" Leviticus 11:29.

Bats are forbidden "flying creeping things" Leviticus 11:23.

Bats are forbidden "flying creeping things" Leviticus eleven:23.

These are the animals considered to be unclean according to Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy fourteen.

It should be noted that the translations of some of the aforementioned animals from the Hebrew are a matter of dispute in classical Jewish commentaries. With respect to birds the Torah merely specifies ones which may NOT be eaten and the translations of these are also a matter of contention in traditional Jewish texts so it is common practice to consume only birds with a clear tradition of being kosher, eg. domestic fowl:

Penguins are unclean because they "do not chew their cud and have split hooves".

Penguins are unclean considering they "do not chew their cud and accept split hooves".

Crabs are considered unclean because they have "not fins and scales".

Crabs are considered unclean because they have "non fins and scales".

Many additional animals are not mentioned specifically by name, but from the characteristics mentioned in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, may besides be considered to be unclean. For case, all shellfish are more often than not considered unclean. Examples of animals ofttimes considered to exist unclean by their characteristics:

(Non a complete list.)

Leviticus 11:20-23 permits certain kinds of "winged swarming things" (i.eastward. insects) while prohibiting others; nevertheless, today rabbis are uncertain as to which insects were specifically permitted, and then now all insects are prohibited to be on the safe side. [8] An exception to this is a number of Yemenite communities that have retained their ain traditions with respect to kosher locusts, as a event these particular locusts are considered kosher for the specific community which has the tradition. Bees' honey is however accounted kosher [ix] considering the Honey is not fabricated by Bees, but is rather collected Nectar that is full-bodied by Bees. There are no exceptions to the rule that any production of a non-kosher animal is as well non-kosher, for case gelatin (merely see the controversy on shellac). Inside the by 20 years "kosher gelatin" has begun appearing; some of this is derived from cows or from fish and made in a mode keeping with kosher traditions, others are derived from a plant or seaweed base of operations using agar or pectin. [10]

In guild to swallow an animal or bird it must exist slaughtered co-ordinate to Jewish constabulary (Shechita). This involves cutting the animal's trachea and esophagus, the carotid artery and jugular vein are also severed in this operation as are most arteries and veins leading to and from the brain with a sharp pocketknife that has been thoroughly checked for imperfections beforehand. The cut must exist swift and without suspension, to avoid tearing, and must exist performed by an expert. Fish must as well exist killed before existence eaten, but no particular method is specified in Jewish law.

The animal must then be adamant to exist costless of treifot which are lxx different categories of injuries, diseases and abnormalities whose presence renders the animal not-kosher.

Not all parts of the animate being may be eaten; certain fats, known as Chelev, may non be eaten. As much blood as possible must be removed from the meat, either by soaking, salting and rinsing or by broiling over a fire. In add-on the sciatic nerve in each leg and the fatty surrounding the nervus must exist removed.

It is forbidden to cook, eat, or derive whatsoever do good from mixtures of milk and meat (and their past-products). It is also forbidden to cook or swallow dairy products together with poultry as a rabinnic injunction confronting mixing milk and meat.

Clean animals in Judaism

The term clean animals in the Hebrew bible is a misnomer every bit the actual term refers to the 'purity' and 'impurity' of the animal, which itself is a reference to the status the animal has in terms of Kashrut and its eligibility for cede. Hence all pure or clean animals are immune to be eaten [are Kosher] while the unclean or impure animals may not exist eaten. These land, bounding main, or air creatures are listed in the book of Leviticus in the Torah and take different criteria for kosher consumption as follows: All animals that take the characteristics of having completely divided hooves and likewise chew their cud are by definition clean. All fish that take both scales and fins are clean. In that location are no biblical signs for poultry as the bible simply delineates 24 specific species of bird as being non-kosher with all other birds being by default, kosher.

Hebrew Bible

This contains a list of make clean animals that are specially mentioned from the Chapter 11 in the book of Leviticus in the Hebrew Bible. Come across the bible on Wikisource.

Note: The Torah specifies sure morphological characteristics in grasshoppers that place them as 1 of four kosher grasshopper species. All other insects and rodents are not kosher.

Expanded listing

This list contains animals that are not specified in the Hebrew Bible, merely from the characteristics mentioned in the passage (Leviticus 11:1-47) are considered to be clean.

  • American Bison
  • Antelope (all species)
  • Deer (all species)
  • Giraffe
  • Goat
  • Pronghorn
  • Reindeer/caribou
  • Water Buffalo
  • Moo-cow
  • Sheep

Islam

In Islamic dietary laws several animals are considered unclean and not to be eaten (Haraam), while others are permitted (Halaal), as long as they have been killed or slaughtered in the correct style. Halaal and Haraam are different to the Jewish Kashrut in that they also comprehend beliefs, spoken language, dress, conduct and style. In non-Arabic-speaking countries withal, the terms are almost normally used in the narrower context of Muslim dietary laws, especially where meat and poultry are concerned, though they tin can be used for the more full general meaning as well.

The Qur'an states:

"Forbidden to you lot are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah. that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to decease; that which hath been eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter information technology; that which is sacrificed on stone [Altar?]; [forbidden] besides is the division by raffling with arrows: that is impiety..." Al-Maidah 5:3

The Qu'ran also states:

" And for the Jews We take forbidden all that have claws; and from the cattle and the sheep We forbade their fat except what is attached to the back, or entrails, or mixed with os. That is a penalty for their rebellion, and We are truthful." Al-An'am 6:146

According to Muslims the most of import condition is that basmala (pronouncing the proper name of Allah) be performed at the time of slaughter. Too important is that the meat of those animals were concluded past Zabiha (Sharia slaughter) of which tasmiyah is a condition. If not those animals are considered Maytah (carrion) and are expressly forbidden. The meat of animals slaughtered by a Kafir (unbeliever) or Mushrik (polytheist) is also forbidden, though the Quran does permit eating nutrient of the people of the volume:

" Today I have made permissible for you pure things and the food of those who were given the Volume (Ahlul-Kitaab) is as well Halal for you lot." Al-Maida five:five

In that location is some dispute amidst Muslims on whether the tasmiyah must exist pronounced at the time of slaughter or at the time of eating.

Dogs

Dogs are considered unclean according to some who study Islamic law. However, a Saluki, such as above, is in some cases cherished by Muslims.

Dogs are considered unclean according to some who written report Islamic law. However, a Saluki, such as above, is in some cases cherished by Muslims.

Dogs are mentioned in Muslims holy book the Quran several times e.one thousand. in the primary story of sura 18 where a dog is a companion of the dwellers of the Cave. The Quran too tells that it is permissible to eat what trained dogs catch (5:4). However, many Islamic teachers land dogs should be considered unclean and that Muslims licked by them must perform purification. According to Hadith, anything a domestic dog touches must exist washed seven times, the final time in dust [xi] . Some religious traditions hold that if a domestic dog passes in front of someone preparing to pray, that it pollutes their purity and negates the prayer.

This view is contested by many modern scholars of the Qu'ran. Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, professor of Islamic Law at UCLA, says this zealous adherence to doctrine led one religious authority to advise a Muslim that his pet domestic dog was evil and should be driven away by cutting off its food and water. [12]

Some other exception appears to be made by the Bedouin in the example of the Saluki. They are allowed in the tents and considered special companions. Information technology has been said that the Bedouin volition never sell a Saluki, but will give ane every bit a special and precious souvenir. [13]

Christianity

In the very early days of Christianity it was debated if converts ought to follow Jewish customs (including circumcision and the dietary laws) or not. The affair was settled at the Council of Jerusalem, where it was decided that new converts are discipline only to the Noahide Laws (See likewise: Genesis vii:two). In the Acts of the Apostles the "apostles and elders" promulgated the decision in a letter "to the Gentile believers":

"For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to u.s.a., to lay upon you no greater brunt than these necessary things; that ye abstain from meats [14] offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled ..." Acts 15:28-29

The commonly held theological position is that with the death and resurrection of Jesus, the "Quondam Covenant" and its restrictions no longer utilize.

In the First Epistle to Timothy it states:

"...commanding to abstain from meats [15] , which God hath created to exist received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature [xvi] of God is expert, and nix to be refused, if it exist received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified past the word of God and prayer." i Timothy 4:3-5

In the Epistle to the Colossians it states:

"...Beware lest any human being spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, afterward the rudiments of the globe, and non after Christ....Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was confronting usa, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the style, nailing information technology to his cross; xv And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 16 Let no homo therefore approximate you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days." Colossians 2:8-sixteen

In Acts 11:viii Peter was convinced that information technology would be out of character for the Lord to recommend an unclean diet. (See also Acts x:10-17 for context.) Acts 11:11,xviii clarifies Peter's vision. These verses point that God was instructing him not to refer to gentiles as "unclean" equally information technology was mutual in Israel. Merely rather, this indicated that conservancy had been extended to the gentiles. Nevertheless, Christians permitted themselves to eat pork, despite the fact that the Torah prohibits it. The main mod day exception to this are the Seventh-mean solar day Adventists whose co-founder Ellen G. White was a proponent of vegetarianism. Many Seventh-24-hour interval Adventists avoid meat for health reasons, though vegetarianism is non a requirement.

There have also been several by groups who made like exceptions such every bit the Marcionists, who strictly followed the Jewish tradition of unclean foods.

In the Roman Catholic Church, it was forbidden to eat meat (divers as the flesh of any warm-blooded animal) on Fri, but as a penance to commemorate Christ's death rather than for meat'due south existence regarded as "unclean" (exceptions are few, such equally when Christmas falls on a Friday, in which instance Thursday is the twenty-four hours of abstinence). Afterward the 2d Vatican Council, the mandatory Friday abstinence from meat was limited to Lent, although some traditionalist Catholics still maintain the forbearance year-round. In Eastern Orthodoxy, both Friday and Wednesday were similarly considered off-limits. Many Protestants on the other hand have never observed the tradition, and consider the tradition to exist heathen in origin.

Scientific studies

In 1953 Dr. David I. Macht, 1 of the primary proponents of biblical scientific foresight, conducted toxicity tests on more than a hundred species of mammals, birds and fish. He reported that in every case, extracts from meat of unclean mammals, birds, and fish inhibited the growth of lupin seedlings more than those the Old Attestation chosen clean. [17] Macht'south methodology, known as phytopharmacology, [18] [19] has not been widely used by other researchers and is regarded as outdated and unreliable by modernistic mainstream scientific discipline.

In 1966, British anthropologist Mary Douglas published the influential study Purity and Danger: An Analysis of Concepts of Pollution and Taboo. In Purity and Danger, Douglas kickoff proposed that the kosher laws were not, every bit many believed, either primitive health regulations or randomly chosen as tests of Jews' delivery to God. Instead, Douglas argued that the laws were near symbolic boundary-maintenance. Prohibited foods were those which did not seem to autumn neatly into any category. Her theory was that pigs were alleged unclean in Leviticus because pigs' place in the natural order was cryptic since they shared the cloven hoof of the ungulates, merely did non chew cud.

A 1985 study by Nanji and French [20] found that there was a significant correlation between cirrhosis and pork consumption. Modernistic day swine raising is very unlike from earlier times with greater exposure to toxins but reduced exposure to pests and disease.
