How Do I Clean Out My Home Air Conditioning Condensation Drain Pipe?

Dan has been in the HVAC manufacture for 23 years with experience ranging from installation and service to sales and distribution.

Cleaning your ducts will cut down on dust in your home for a long time to come.

Cleaning your ducts will cutting downward on dust in your dwelling house for a long time to come.

Reduce Dust in Your Home and Relieve Coin Doing It

There are many reasons to make clean the air ducts in your dwelling. When ducts are clean, the heating system lasts longer (considering in that location is less dirt wearing out its components), we dust less often, and the air we breathe at home is cleaner. For those of us with allergies, this should be a welcome comeback.

Probably, you don't own a high-powered, truck-mounted vacuum system with 150 pes-hoses, and perhaps y'all tin't afford the price of such a service, only I am going to tell you how you can clean air ducts yourself. Certain, you won't be able to reach every nook and cranny, but you tin can still eliminate roughly 85% of the dust in your system without spending any more than the cost of your new furnace filter.

There are many different designs of duct systems, such as attic systems and hole-and-corner systems, but the theory of cleaning these systems is the same. You lot may non exist able to access all parts of these systems (for example, hush-hush ducts), but y'all can brand a difference in your air quality by cleaning the parts of the organisation that yous can reach.

Earlier we get started, check out this video of what i of those loftier-powered, truck-mounted vacuum systems looks like at work on a pretty neglected duct system.

What You Demand to Clean Your Air Ducts

  1. Furnace Filter: You will definitely need a new furnace filter at the cease of the job. Make certain y'all choose the right filter option for you.
  2. Vacuum: A household-type vacuum with a decent hose attached volition work, simply a heavier-duty "Shop Vac" unit is better, if available.
  3. Brush: Something closely resembling a toilet brush will work best, but a stiff-bristle paintbrush or something similar will do.
  4. Screwdriver or Hex Commuter: Your registers are likely held in identify by some kind of fasteners. Yous will need to utilize whatsoever tool fits the fasteners, usually a Phillips screwdriver or i/4" hex commuter.
  5. Newspaper Towels: Unless you want to do a lot of dusting and sweeping right after you lot clean your ducts, you will find these useful to embrace some registers while you lot clean others.

Pace-by-Step Duct Cleaning

1. Cover supply registers. Start by covering up your supply air registers (openings that supply heated air to the rooms) with paper towels. Y'all do this to keep dislodged grit from globe-trotting into the rooms as you work. Simply elevator the register, wrap the newspaper towel over the top of information technology, and replace it.

Covering the register helps keep the dust down.

Roofing the annals helps go along the grit downward.

2. Turn on fan. You want the fan running while you are cleaning, to movement the grit along that you lot are going to loosen with your banging and brushing. Set the thermostat to "fan on," and shut off the "estrus/cool" mode then that but the fan is running. If you lot don't take a fan-merely option, you can run the heat, or you might have this opportunity to install a newer thermostat with this helpful option.

3. Check filter. Brand certain your quondam furnace filter is in place, so that the dust you knock loose doesn't cease up getting pulled into the fan motor.

4. Loosen dust in ducts. Knock loose any buildup of dust in the duct work. Simply take the handle of your brush and begin tapping on whatever accessible duct piece of work you have in the basement. This will help intermission up any deposits of dampened dust that may have stuck to the insides of the duct.

5. Make clean supply registers. At present you tin can start sweeping out the grit in your supply registers. With the vacuum running and the end of the hose near the register, lift the register. Use the hose to catch any dust that is existence pushed out by the fan, and proceed to sweep equally far into the annals's pipe as your hose tin can accomplish. Use your castor to scuff loose any built upwards dust in the register. Equally you go through the house sweeping out the supply registers, y'all tin remove and dispose of the paper towels you've put in identify.

The registers in the floor should lift out easily.

The registers in the floor should elevator out easily.

half dozen. Clean return air registers. Sweep out your render air registers. These will likely be fastened with a spiral and require your tool to remove them. Again, castor and sweep equally far back into the register piping or cavity as you can.

Read More From Dengarden

Return air registers are usually mounted to the wall. They gather more dust and dirt than supply registers.

Return air registers are usually mounted to the wall. They assemble more dust and dirt than supply registers.

7. Shut off fan and furnace. Shut the fan off at the thermostat and the ability off to the furnace via the service switch or breaker panel. Practise not just shut off the thermostat, considering that doesn't plow off the ability to the unit of measurement.

8. Clean out blower compartment and return air kicking. With the power off, you can remove the panels on the front end of the furnace and admission the blower compartment and the render air boot. Use your vacuum to sweep up the grit built up in the blower compartment and render air boot. This is where the dandy bulk of your dust will be. Since you lot're in here, y'all should clean the furnace fan also. Have a wait at the detailed article (with pictures) I wrote, How to Clean a Furnace Fan for a guide on doing this.

nine. Replace furnace filter. Buying a meliorate filter volition definitely cutting downward on the grit in your home. But the better the filter, the more frequently y'all should modify it; a dingy filter restricts the airflow to the fan, which results in the blower motor running hotter and reducing its lifespan. How often y'all should change your filter depends on your dwelling, your pets, and your location.

My Furnace Filter Recommendation: Filtrete MPR 1000s

I'thousand asked a lot about what filter I use. I prefer these Filtrete MPR 1000 filters. They filter a bulk of the bad stuff that could exist circulating through your abode'south ductwork, do a great job keeping the ducts clean over the long haul, and they aren't such a tight filter that they need replacing too frequently (similar the MPR 1500s, for example). They're merely a really adept residue betwixt good air and depression maintenance.

Accessing Master Ducts

The areas you could non reach with the steps in a higher place are not likely to incorporate a lot of dust and dirt. However, if y'all are determined to clean every place yous can, there are a couple more things you can practice.

1. Remove end caps from rectangular duct work. If you have rectangular duct work, like in the picture beneath, you can remove the end caps to access the inside of the ducts. Yous can slide the "drives" down off the duct and pull the cap out of the "slips." And then long as the duct is not butting upwardly against the wall, you should be able to reach your vacuum hose in through the infinite uncovered by removing the cap, and sweep out whatever grit y'all notice. Yous could even use a flashlight to expect within the duct for muddied areas.

The vertical piece of metal on the right is called a drive. It is folded over on the top and bottom of the duct to hold it in place. With a pair of pliers, you can unfold it and pull the drive down off the duct on both sides to detach the two pieces.

The vertical slice of metal on the right is called a drive. Information technology is folded over on the top and bottom of the duct to concur information technology in place. With a pair of pliers, you tin unfold it and pull the drive down off the duct on both sides to detach the two pieces.

2. Make clean inside basement registers. Frequently duct work will include registers installed throughout the system to distribute air to the basement. If you remove these registers, yous'll gain even further access to the main body line.

Congratulations!

If you practice what y'all can of the items above, you volition take made a pregnant paring in the grit in your environment, and yous volition have done the best you can, short of calling a professional person air duct cleaning company.

Questions & Answers

Question: I have vents in every room past the ceiling, and I accept no basement. My furnace is in the closet of my one level firm. How tin I clean it myself?

Respond: In that location are many different designs of duct systems, such equally cranium systems and hugger-mugger systems, just the theory of cleaning these systems is the same. You may not be able to admission all parts of these systems (for example, underground ducts), only yous can make a difference in your air quality by cleaning the parts of the arrangement that you can achieve.

Question: This is a very helpful article, also wondering about how long to leave the fan on for?

Reply: Thank you. I exit my fan run most 345 days a twelvemonth.

Question: When cleaning my ventilation ducts, can I leave the fan and furnace on if I just want to vacuum out the cavity below the air annals?

Answer: Sure. At that place's no problem with that.

Question: Yous say y'all leave your furnace fan running 345 days of the year; doesn't this increment your utility bill quite a bit?

Reply: Of course it's not free but information technology's barely noticeable. The cost of keeping a fan running once information technology's gotten started is minimal and when you cistron in the furnace running less cycles per day information technology becomes a wash or meliorate sometimes. Then there'south the comfort of having even temperatures throughout the house. That in itself is worth the times when it does perhaps price me a few dollars a month. I recommend you requite it a try. To gauge the cost you'd really want to beginning in a month where there's no real need for heating or cooling so you can meet the bear on on your bills. If you beginning now (winter) it'southward hard because of course your neb is going to be higher than last month so how much of that is a result of running the fan is hard to detect. Perhaps y'all tin can compare to last year at this time and meet assuming your electric hasn't gone up.

Question: Are solid foursquare ducts ameliorate and cleaner than collapsable types?

Answer: Cleaner yeah. Better? Depends on how they're installed simply if proper, so not really. They each fill the need they are designed for. I personally would employ hard duct whenever I can merely flex duct is necessary in certain applications.

Question: I have grit around my ceiling registers in some rooms and my filter on return annals gets dusty and dirty in less than a month. Will cleaning higher up assistance?

Answer: Cleaning never hurts but every business firm is dissimilar with a lot of factors that determine how dusty a business firm gets and how fast.

Question: I think a lot of grit got sucked into my ceiling ducts. I can clean one day and write my name in the dust the next day. What practice you recommend?

Answer: My commodity is intended to brand things "better" for homeowners who may non exist able to afford a pro cleaning or just to perform upkeep and ameliorate their air quality. Ceiling ducts are often connected to flexible ducting so the theory is the same, simply you have to be careful non to tear the interior liner. And then, advisedly do the best you lot can only if you want every nook and cranny and tin can beget it, hire a pro. (Don't forget that keeping your fan running helps make clean your air and if you use a pleated filter, you can do even better. Perhaps have to change it more oft, but it's definitely worth it. Did I say run the fan? I always tell people this and they don't listen. I approximate it goes against our instincts or something.)

Question: Will leaving the fan running year circular increase the utility bill and how about turning off the pilot light?

Reply: I go out my fan run approximately 340 days a twelvemonth and notice very little if whatever affect on my electrical bill. As for the airplane pilot, I would turn mine off if I had one but I am comfy knowing how to and remembering to relight it when the fall rolls around. No sense called-for up gas for 6 months for no reason.

Question: Tin can round flex ducts be cleaned?

Answer: Yep. More carefully and non perfectly but yes.

Question: Every time we turn on the heat we get a odor throughout the trailer which smells similar poop, and we immediately get nauseous. Whatever suggestions on what the cause may be?

Respond: A bad oestrus exchanger can make an awful smell, and those are symptoms of CO exposure so I would definitely take it checked out and get a CO detector immediately. Often times a heat exchanger will have a xx year warranty on it.

Question: How often should we clean our ducts?

Answer: I would recommend having the furnace cleaned annually simply the ducts less frequently. It actually depends on the person (allergies, etc.) and the dwelling house (number of pets, etc.).

Question: I have the large air filters (24x16x5). Can I add filters to the return air grills and eliminate the big Honeywell filter?

Answer: Actually, that'due south a pretty standard size for a residential system. That said, there's no real way to do this, and it would non be financially a good thought if you could. If the furnace is in the home there are ways to put the filter right in the bottom of the furnace itself, but otherwise, I hate to say it, but it would be hard to exercise much near this situation other than to call a company to do a semi-almanac maintenance for you. I understand the inconvenience, but once more, information technology would be difficult or expensive or both to rearrange this. A cheesecloth over the vents would exist an choice but would exist a lot to alter them regularly. It wouldn't catch all that goes into the organisation, and you would desire to remove the main filter. I would fifty-fifty more so recommend a servicing one time or twice a year since the blower will likely dirty upwardly faster then you might also merely allow them change the filter and save the other efforts.

Question: How do I become rid of a musty smell in my house?

Answer: For a quick fix, placing dryer sheets on the air filter could help. But exist certain they are on the right side of the filter so they don't get sucked into the blower and employ a clean filter.

Question: Would information technology help go along dust downward by putting cheesecloth on your vents permanently?

Answer: You would accept to modify them like whatever other filter and make sure they aren't restricting airflow, just your main filter takes care of about of this. Information technology would probably exist more piece of work and maintenance than its worth.

Question: When cleaning air ventilation ducts, do I run just the fan or the fan on cool? Should the thermostat be in absurd or heat mode?

Respond: You lot leave everything you lot would as normal only switch the fan to "on". The rest of the organisation will still operate as it normally would, simply the fan will continue to run betwixt cycles.

Question: Are registers and vents the aforementioned thing?

Reply: The terminology gets confusing, but yes. There are return air registers/vents that depict air back to the fan and should non have a mode to shut and supply air vent bring conditioned air back to the rooms and usually can be shut via a damper of some sort. Whether in the floor, on the wall, or in the ceiling they are all registers/vents.

Question: When cleaning the return ducts should all registers be covered to preclude dust from going thru the house while the fan is on?

Answer: I believe that's mentioned in this commodity. I would recommend it, yes.

Our ac was cooling well until heavy rains that we had final calendar week. When I turned it back on, there was no gurgling so I thought things were back to normal. Since that night the air-conditioning is not cooling well and at present I wonder if the rainwater brought dirt into the ductwork. If and then, what is the remedy?

Dan Reed (author) on June 01, 2022:

At that place isn't any specific equipment that I tin can recommend for cleaning your ain ducts. There isn't anything I'grand enlightened of for such and is why I but recommend you shake em around a scrap to loosen up any grit in there and let the air move it down the line for you. Perhaps a professional company would have something special for those merely I wouldn't be sure what that is. If y'all practise have an idea then just go along in mind that you don't want to apply anything that might puncture or tear the inner liner.

Patrick - No. I do not. Nor Aeroseal for that matter. I only know they use the type of engineering science that is best for your type of state of affairs so if you've found another company using this type of tech then I would take to say information technology'south a money toss as I have no groundwork on either as a company, but the tech.

Thanks for the assist, Dan!

I wasn't aware of Aeroseal, thanks for pointing me in that location. Have you lot had whatever experience with Duct Armor https://www.ductarmor.com/?

Dan Reed (author) on May 07, 2022:

Patrick - First, I personally wouldn't pay if the ducts aren't clean. That's what they charged for and that'southward what they should deliver. If they didn't check with a camera to see if there was some reason they couldn't clean the ducts proper then that'due south their error for not being diligent on the quote and they know underground ducts tin can nowadays these kind of issues. Secondly, I would look into Aeroseal. Here is a link to another article that tin can help you empathize that. It's not cheap but would likely be cheaper than your alternatives. Information technology's at least worth looking into. https://dengarden.com/appliances/The-ii-Easiest-Way...

Patrick on May 06, 2022:

Thanks for your commodity.

Nosotros recently purchased a business firm and it turns out the heating ducts are fabricated of Transite. The business firm is one story and all ducts are in the slab. We've had the air tested for asbestos, and there is none, but the ducts do indeed contain asbestos.

I take two questions.

We had a company clean the ducts. They want to accuse $700 (haven't paid yet considering job is not complete). They've supposedly cleaned the ducts twice now, but there is a big amount of rodent poop, debris, sand, etc. still in them. Information technology seems like this company either doesn't know how to clean ducts or isn't capable of doing then. They apparently didn't cover the estrus registers while they were cleaning because the entire firm is at present covered in dust. Extremely frustrating considering we just had the floors cleaned and cleaned all of the shelving.

Question one: How would you go on with this?

I've read online the best affair to do with in-slab ducts is to fill them with concrete, cap them off, and effigy out another way to supply rut to the house.

Question two: What are options here? I've researched heat pumps a bit, just really don't want to install them every bit they would destroy the exterior aesthetic of the house. But I'g thinking they might exist the only option since information technology is a single story business firm on a slab. There is an attic that is accessible.

Calculation things like air cleaner and UV light to the organization tin assist long term with some of this but having the a/c scroll cleaned and checked (the indoor evaporator coil) is a good commencement if you've not had that washed before. If the aroma is coming from the crawlspace and getting pulled into the air stream is the issue then sealing the ductwork with a mastic may also be a good measure and is something you can do yourself with a bucket of mastic, a pigment castor, pair of rubber gloves and long sleeves....you don't want to get information technology tangled up in your arm hair and such. Jill - Not all HVAC companies clean duct. There are actually businesses who specifically practise just that. I'm non sure who y'all spoke to only that is something to consider. There are also sure duct systems that possibly only a few companies would be equipped to handle.

If yous don't then I'm still not sure what that could be. Note: Many rut exchangers have rather long warranties. 20 years...maybe lifetime.

I have a sewage gas odor coming from air ducts. What would yous suggest?

Dan Reed (author) on May 17, 2022:

I would definitely need more than info than this to aid only will say kickoff thing is to check your filter. Also, when is the last time the coils indoor and outdoor were cleaned? If the unit is running proper and you're not getting air, these are the usual suspects.

Ivana Alfieri on May 16, 2022:

I take iii air units in my restaurant and nothing is coming out of vents or very little air .

Dan Reed (author) on March 08, 2022:

Colleen - I assume you have underground ducting then and y'all would need to have them cleared and sealed which will probable crave a off-white corporeality of money and a professional. If they aren't undercover and yous're experiencing this then it sounds like your ducts are in need of insulating because they are in an unconditioned space and the inner and outer temps are creating condensation. Thank you for reading.

Colleen Vincelli on March 07, 2022:

what happens when yous take a lot of h2o in your air ducts..nosotros just have central air, not heating ?

Dan Reed (author) on Jan xvi, 2022:

Give thanks you Greenmind!

GreenMind Guides from U.s.a. on January 15, 2022:

Hey swell hub with lots of skilful info and communication. I similar the way you write and you conspicuously know what you're talking about.

violet shrop on January 09, 2022:

Cheers so much Daniel-

Dan Reed (author) on January 06, 2022:

Violet Shrop - Thank you lot and no. You don't desire the power off while cleaning registers...you lot desire the fan running. At present one time you go to the furnace itself, at the end and you're ready to modify the filter and wrap up...yes. Turn off the power.

Thanks for reading.

VioletShrop on January 06, 2022:

This is really well written & helpful. Simply to make sure: then to clean your return register, you don't need to shut the ability off? I wouldn't remember so either, mine looks like yours, just a infinite nether the hvac cabinet, no electric element seen. Thanks.

Dan Reed (writer) on January 03, 2022:

Tyler - Yes. If the breaker to the furnace is off, y'all should be safe under normal circumstances. A simple voltage detector is e'er squeamish to have though to be certain. You but impact it to anything and if in that location is voltage, information technology will glimmer and/or beep. Only costs like $twenty and is useful for many things. Thanks for reading.

Tyler on Jan 02, 2022:

If I switch off the breaker, then I tin can touch everything on the unit of measurement at the intake right? Thanks Daniel this is awesome.

Dan Reed (writer) on December 29, 2022:

DCME - Nothing actually happens. Yous but won't exist able to clean that area without getting upwards there. If you lot get as much as yous can, you're still doing something.

DCME on Dec 12, 2022:

some of the supply registers are in a valeted ceiling. since i can't tech them what happens

Dan Reed (author) on November 24, 2022:

Christine - I think you're misunderstanding. I'yard recommending you cover the supply registers, non the render and simply temporarily, non forever. Information technology would accept a lot more than than a paper towel over the supply registers for a few minutes to burn down up a motor. Specially on the supply side. If information technology were return air, I'd say you're right merely fifty-fifty then, it would have a lot more a newspaper towel and few minutes to cause any sort of damage to the motor.

christine on November 19, 2022:

covering the registers and running the fan will burn out the fan. bad thought.

D. Bunch on October 23, 2022:

We bought an older mobile home over a yr ago. I bought a wet dry vac and it didn't have enough suction power to vacuum the flooring duct. The return air is asunder. I run window a.c. units and have only floor heat. There are blockages in the duct. And so, is a store vac improve than wet/dry vac? I need rut desperately earlier winter arrives.

Dan Reed (author) on October 13, 2022:

Nib - The metal shouldn't agree the olfactory property and you probably won't be able to clean it all unless y'all disconnect it and so for the time and effort, I'd supercede the damaged duct and registers rather than try and clean them.

Bill on October 08, 2022:

Howdy, just bought a firm where previous possessor allowed dogs to urinate all over air vents. Some urine must have leaked downward air ducts. What is best way to make clean air ducts?

Dan Reed (author) on October 08, 2022:

Mila - Not all ducts can feasibly be reached and vertical ducts in the wall are non usually the chief culprit in holding grit. This article is about doing a pretty darn expert job on your own simply not necessarily to get to every nook and cranny. Thanks for reading!

Mila on October 06, 2022:

I have air exchanger the pips are in the wall.Haw can I clean them my selfish?

Kim Spraggins on September 27, 2022:

After trying to find as good deal on air duct cleaning I thought about researching how to do information technology ourselves and I'm and so glad I did! This rehab house has been sitting for 9 yrs and only God knows what's been lurking and swirling effectually for the 2+yrs since we installed the furnace. Now with 2 cats everything gets covered in grit especially in the summertime with no key air, only loftier-powered floor fans. I bake cakes and have to plough them all off to go along the dust, lint, true cat hair etc from landing in them! Eeek...and when the sun shines through the window the dust becomes fifty-fifty more visible! Dust, dust, dust...I can't take information technology any more than and will be so happy when we're done with this DIY project! Update to follow! Thank you then much!!!! Mmmwah

Kristen Howe from Northeast Ohio on May 02, 2022:

Daniel, these were great tips on how to clean the air vents yourself with elementary and easy steps. Voted upwards for useful!

MarkE on April ten, 2022:

I would like to add together that a lot of the dust is from your home and mostly found in your return vents and return ducting because as it pulls the air into the ducting from your house, forth with the dust and moisture, some of it will gravitate towards the bottom of the ducting due to

one) gravity

2) wet condensing

3) static electricity

Your supply vents ought to be relatively clean in comparing due to the fact that there is an air filter upstream from the supply vents preventing any dust , usually, from going whatever farther than the filter. All the same there will be some albeit a lot less in whatever event.

Banging on the exterior of your vents may release some grit but opening upwards the vents at their ends if possible volition let you to vacuum a heck of a lot more dust.

I am replacing as many joist liners every bit possible, because it is relatively cheap and gets rid of whatsoever rust, mold, bacteria, and of course dust that you lot may or may not see.

Skillful luck in your ventures, may the wind always be at your back!

Dan Reed (writer) on July 25, 2022:

Well, if it's just a slice, I'd throw it abroad. It's likely a flake piece that'due south been in there longer than you may take realized and in your cleaning, worked it's way to visibility. Unfortunately, much droppings found in duct is from structure and people using the duct as a dustpan. If you don't run into any parts missing or holes in the ducting, and so just toss it and know that they're that much cleaner.

Nina on July 24, 2022:

Prior to reading your commodity, I cleaned my ductwork with a shop vac and it worked really well. The next mean solar day I found a piece of ductwork in one of the floor registers. Not sure what to do nearly it. Any help is much appreciated.

Dan Reed (writer) on July 09, 2022:

Jeremy - I permit all comments. Particularly ones like this because it gives me the opportunity to educate people. Showtime off, if you really read the article, I clearly state this is a pretty expert way to go if you don't have the money for professionals. I'chiliad guessing you're a duct cleaner and don't desire me showing people a prissy alternative that will salvage them coin and improve their air quality far more than doing nothing. My manufactures are not aimed to assistance or hurt anyone's business...only to assistance people who can't afford such services to practice the best they can to aid themselves enjoy these luxuries when it's inside their ability to practice so. I stand up by every word in this article. With over 20 years in HVAC from loading trucks to currently running big commercial projects and everything in betwixt, I think the professionals are already on it. Thanks for reading...or kind of anyhow.

Jeremy on July 09, 2022:

lol!! You recollect this compares to a existent cleaning in any way? Non even close. Some jobs should be left to the professionals.

Dan Reed (writer) on Nov xix, 2022:

Yeah. It is expensive. Glad I could assistance.

Candice on November nineteen, 2022:

I was just quoted between $300 and $600 to clean my ducts. I refuse to pay that. So I'll exist doing this myself and I greatly appreciate this how to.

Dan Reed (writer) on July 01, 2022:

Thanks bleedercleaners. Yep and the skilful news is, in a new habitation, if you clean the ducts really well right afterward the domicile is built, y'all will cutting down on much of the dust forever. Unfortunately, in a new home, the drywall and sawdust often gets into and is swept into the oestrus vents. Get it at present and it can help a lot.
